The Influence Marvel Comics Have Had on the Marvel Cinematic Universe

By Matthew Francis

I have chosen this topic because I am an avid reader of Marvel Comics and a huge fan of their movies. I will look at the influences the movies have taken from the comics from things such as storylines, costumes, locations and characterisations.

At the time of writing, there are currently twenty two Marvel movies split into three specific phases consisting of six, six and eleven movies respectively released over the last ten years. Each phase consists of movies starring solo characters building to and ensemble cast Avengers movie as the finale to each phase. Given the large number of movies, I won’t be focusing in detail on every one in detail but instead choosing my favourites. These will be:

Phase One

  • Iron Man (2008)
  • Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
  • Avengers Assemble (2012)

Phase Two

  • Iron Man 3 (2013)
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
  • Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron

Phase Three

  • Captain America: Civil War (2016)
  • Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
  • Black Panther (2018)
  • Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
